Building a house - where to begin

We put offers on 9 other homes in the Seattle area before we won the bidding war on our house. It was a cute 1942 2 bedroom brick house in need of significant repairs. You could tell the roof needed replacement from satellite imagery on Google Earth. It was built during World War II so the accommodates were basic, though the house was not without its charm. It was the first single-family home that Brett and I have ever bought together. Prospective repair men would knock on the door offering to bid on replacing our roof - but we had bigger plans.

Before we could begin we needed to identify an architect to work with. One of my sister's close friends is an architect and she was kind enough to let me pepper her with questions about the process. After discussing the basics, I set out to develop an RFP that included essential requirements, objectives and prioritization for design elements of our future remodel. Identification of must haves and nice to haves helped communicate and steer interviews and meetings with prospective architecture firms.
