Change your life in 5 minutes a day

#100DAYPROJECT Day 12 #juliebennettcreative @juliebennettseattle

The premise is simple. Wonderful things are, I find, delightfully simple. I have changed my life in 5 minutes a day by starting a new habit. You can too. Thoughtfully and intentionally I have set aside 5 minutes of my morning for creative exercises and problem solving. Now, after making this a daily habit since August, I have re-wired my brain and I don't have to be deliberate about starting my day this way, the habit has formed and I start it instinctually now.

My morning follows a typical routine. Wake up, shower, get ready for work, make coffee, drive to work. Once I get to the office, I park my car and start my day in the cafeteria. I get coffee and some breakfast, sit down at table in the cafeteria and the time on my phone for 5 minutes. During this time I complete a creativity exercise. I work through strategic problems, methodologies or concepts that need simplification. I have a running list of things I want to work through ready to go.

The 5 minutes is a helpful constraint. (Constraints are really important - but more on that another day.) It is specific, short and enough time to kick start the idea factory. If I get into a creative flow, I might renew my timer and work for an additional 5 minutes. If I'm In this short amount of time, I dig deeper and might reference a resource to keep going. I use the book Thinkertoys: A Handbook of Creative-Thinking Techniques to help me get back on track. Think of your problem or challenge like the most amazing video clip on Shark Week. You need to see it from every possible angle for the best story to emerge.

I have already done something productive before I ever open my email. I've generated new ideas or considered ways talking about something complex. I sketch and draw my ideas in notes and pictures. Drawing my ideas in pictures activates a different part of my brain. It make them easier to remember and improves my recall when I revise my notes later.

This is 5 minutes. Everyone has 5 minutes a day. It can change everything.
