Documentary Haircuts

The Amazon photo app is constantly reminding me about the photos I've taken in years past. This little gem popped up a while back and I've been saving it. It's one of my favorites from a trip to Boise. The women in the photo has cut three generations of hair in the family at Jana's Hair Cuttin' Store. We were there over Christmas or maybe it was Thanksgiving a couple years ago.

I love to photograph the every day. There is a simple joy in getting a hair cut, and Grandma and Grandpa were both there to watch. Even now I look back and can hardly believe how little he was then. His little legs barely reach over the chair. It was not his first haircut, maybe not even his second.

These moments are organic. The days in between the the milestones are when our lives are lived. They are worth documenting. They tell us something about how we lived, worked, traveled, and loved one another. I bask in the glow of seeing my parents with my children. It's not always easy being around our household with three little tantrum throwing personalities. But it is worth it. There is joy and pride on their faces.
