The Power of Mindset from an Eternal Optimist

Mindset is everything. With small children this is absolutely true. I'm an eternal optimist and futurist. (Sometimes I find it's important to balance these qualities with extra awareness of empathy, because when people are going through hard stuff it's a strange lens when the world is sunny outside when your stormy on the inside).  But how do I instill this in my kids? How do I empower them with the belief and mindset that their happiness is within reach and within their control and that they can make their future better?

Somedays the whining begins early. A long sequence of short statements beginning with the words "I want." It's hard and it can be hard to reset my mommy patience button (let's be real, especially at the end of the day when bedtime is going sideways and I just need half a minute)...

So we've been framing things in terms of choices. Choices we make every minute, every hour, everyday. Choosing to say "this is the best day ever" and then making it so. Or saying "this is not a big deal" and modeling for my kids how to keep my cool in any situation (most of they time - we're all human here).  Or choosing strategically to make a fuss when it IS important. Some days are better than others, but little by little I'm trying to write my motherhood with optimism, compassion and a memory box lined with love, hope, and a little can-do spirit.

Yes. You can put on your own pants.  See, I'm putting it to work already.
